Hidden in a mountain pass northeast of Tan-Tan, Ouin Medkour is an oasis the crowds never found. Palms gather around a spring in a fold of bare rock; nearby lie the nomads' cemetery and the tombs of marabouts — a landscape of legends, silence and shade, unchanged for generations.

Minutes from the residence, the desert leans into the sea: at Chbika a seasonal river cuts a green ribbon through ochre banks to a wide, honey-coloured shore. It is the kind of beach you may have entirely to yourself — dunes at your back, Atlantic rollers ahead, and falcons riding the wind above.

Its name means "the wonder of God" — a sheer sinkhole on the very edge of the ocean, fifteen metres across and thirty deep, where the Atlantic breathes in and out of a hidden sea cave below. Stand at the rope fence and feel the swell pulse beneath the Sahara's crust.

Oued Drâa — River Mouth

Morocco's longest river ends its 1,100-kilometre journey here, slipping between low cliffs onto a wide Atlantic beach. Where fresh water meets the sea a hushed wetland forms — sandbars, herons and wind-carved stone — with empty golden sand stretching north of the mouth.

Planning your excursions

Do I need a 4×4 to visit these places?

No — Oued Chbika, the Drâa estuary viewpoints, Akhfennir and Khnifiss National Park are all reached on the paved N1 coastal road with short, easy final approaches. Only the Ouin Medkour oasis involves about 7 km of desert track, manageable in dry weather with a normal car driven carefully.

Which excursion fits a half day from El Ouatia?

Oued Chbika (about 40 minutes south) and the Drâa estuary (about 45 minutes north) each make a perfect half-day trip from the residence — beach, birdlife and cliffs, and back in time for dinner.

When is the best time to see flamingos at Khnifiss?

Between November and March, when more than 20,000 waterbirds winter on the Naïla lagoon. Early morning light is calmest for photography, and the drive from Résidence Acharif takes about 1 h 45 along the coast.
